Where the stone comes from
The Utah mountains, and what it takes to get up there.
The material for most of this comes out of the mountains in Utah, and out of abandoned America — old foundries, old mines, places that already had a life before I got to them.
Going up to find it is most of the job. You are reading country rather than shopping: where water has cut, where a seam surfaces, what has already broken loose and saved you the trouble. Then you have to get it down.
The lakes up there are the reason the sails look the way they do, as much as the sea is. Still water with mountains standing in it does something to your sense of scale.
I will write this one properly. There are specific trips worth telling.
