Training at the USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor
Working above a war grave, and what it left behind.
There is a line in my artist's statement about the bones in the ocean, and about the lost friends. It is not a metaphor I reached for.
We trained at Pearl Harbor. The Arizona is still down there with her crew in her, and oil still comes up off her. You go about your work above that, and you are aware of it the whole time.
The sails came later, but a lot of them come from there — the sea as something that holds people, not just something you cross.
This one needs writing properly. It is the hardest of these to get right, and it is mine to write.
