From the studio
The bench, and the chisels
The tools, and why they are laid out that way.
A roll of chisels laid out in order is not tidiness for its own sake. It is so your hand finds the right one without your eyes leaving the stone.
Points for taking material off fast. Tooth chisels for bringing a surface down evenly. Flats for the last of it. Then rasps, then abrasives, then the long polish. Each one undoes the marks of the one before it, which means going out of order costs you hours.
The hammer matters more than people expect. Weight and face decide how much the stone takes per strike, and the difference between the right hammer and the nearly-right one shows up as fatigue by the afternoon.
Most of these have been reground more than once. They get shorter every year.
