Utah fine artist sculptor Byron Ramos working on an alabaster sail

Most of this work is not the part anyone photographs. It is dust, water, and the same movement repeated until a surface is right.

I work across stone, metal and wood — alabaster, marble, limestone, honeycomb calcite, soapstone — and whatever the mountains and abandoned America will give up. Slag, glass, foundry brick. Material that already had a life before it got here.

Instead of the rifle it is now the hammer and the chisel. That is the whole change, and it is a bigger one than it sounds.

The studio is where the failure happens too. The stone chips somewhere you did not want it to, and you either deal with it, work around it, or give up. That is the Art of Failure, and it is not a slogan — it is what the days are actually like.
