From the studio
A carving demonstration
Working in public, with people watching.
Carving in front of people is a different job from carving alone.
The bucket, the easel, the umbrella — that is the whole studio reduced to what fits in a truck. You lose the good light and the good bench and you work slower, because half of what you are doing is answering questions while your hands keep going.
It is worth it. Most people have never watched stone being cut, and the moment it stops being a rock and starts being a shape is the thing that gets them. You cannot explain that; they have to see it happen.
Children ask the best questions. They want to know whether it hurts the stone.
